Dignity in An Undignified World

There have been quite a few instances where the word dignity has sprung from my lips lately.  I began thinking on what the exact meaning of the word was so I Googled it.

  1. the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.
“a man of dignity and unbending principle”
    • a composed or serious manner or style.
      “he bowed with great dignity”
synonyms: stateliness, nobility, majesty, regality, courtliness, augustness, loftiness, lordliness, grandeur

    • a sense of pride in oneself; self-respect.
“it was beneath his dignity to shout”
      synonyms: self-respect, pride, self-esteem, self-worth

      “he had lost his dignity”

I think this will be my word for 2017.  Why?  I think there are many circumstances recently that have left many of us wondering where did our dignity go?  If you want to change the world, start at home, right?

With our children, on our farm, in our community, I will strive to be dignified and give grace to others that they may find their dignity.  It makes it much easier to do this when we look through the lens of our Maker.  Now, I know this is hard to accomplish on your own.  We have to ask Him to open our eyes that we may see others as made in His image.  When we realize others are like us, we can focus on the person and not the sin or situation that bothers us.  That is what is supposed to set Christians apart.

Proverbs 27:23  Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds

Since moving to the Farmstead, my children have fallen in love with our chickens and our puppy.  Ok, I have too.  The chickens run up to us whenever we go outside because they know I have a treat or I will go back inside and get one.  We have had people look at us with a bit of criticism because we “operated” on our rooster’s foot to take care of his bumblefoot.  Yes, we do care for our animals.  They are a gift and privilege from God to tend.  I plan on treating whatever animals we have with dignity as to how they should be handled and kept.  We have that sorely lacking in our society today.  At the grocery store, we grab things and throw them into the cart and off we go.  Who knows what is that?

Responding to my family and community with stateliness and my animals and land with respect and treating them all with worth are simple ways to bring dignity into and an undignified world.

Proverbs 31:25  Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.
